Cleaning Your Paint
*EASY*
If your paint normally remains dull and weathered before a washing, it should be cleaned with a chemical cleaner. If your paint is normally hazy white (chalky), it has oxidized and needs to be cleaned with abrasives since all the oils in the paint have evaporated. Use the following procedure to restore the gloss:
- Wash and dry your car.
- If your paint has a white, hazy look, apply a high quality polish containing mild abrasive cleaner to remove the top layer of "dead" paint. The fresh paint layer underneath should eventually be revealed to give the surface a shine. Follow the polish manufacturer's instructions for application. Use rubbing compound only in cases of extreme paint oxidation.
- If your paint is just dull and has no shine, apply a chemical cleaner to gently remove the dead paint layer.
- Wax your car immediately after polishing or cleaning it in order to protect the newly exposed paint layer. This slows the process of oil evaporation from the new paint layer and maintains the shine.
Only use chrome polish to clean chrome parts. Do not use steel wool or kitchen scrub pads to clean chrome; it could be scratched.
To remove bumper stickers, spray them with aerosol lubricant. Allow the penetrating oil to soak in to the stickers for a few hours, then rub or scrape them away. Stickers can sometimes be removed using the hot air from a hair dryer. However, this method works best for chrome or metal surfaces since paint or plastic could be damaged by heat.
